Anusol HC Ointment can be used for getting rid of the pain, swelling, itching and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids. 

Anusol creams or ointments are corticosteroids that can be applied topically to significantly reduce the itching and burning sensations in and around the anal area. 

It is also effective in providing relief from swelling and inflammation caused by external hemorrhoids. Anusol suppositories can be used to heal the internal hemorrhoid swelling. 

How Does It Work? 

Anusol HC hemorrhoidal ointments have antiseptic and astringent properties. They are used to cleanse and soothe the affected area. 

This hemorrhoid ointment gets quickly absorbed by the skin. It works by reducing the pain and swelling in and around the anal area. It also facilitates easy bowel movements. 

The product has astringent properties that cools and soothes the inflamed area. 

What Are The Ingredients? 

Zinc Oxide: It is an astringent that soothes the affected area and reduces swelling. It also acts as an antiseptic.

Balsam Peru: It is mildly antiseptic and has a protective action on painful areas. It promotes healing.

Bismuth Salts: It has astringent and antiseptic properties. It calms the irritated areas in and around the anal opening.

How To Use It? 

Clean the affected area with mild soap & warm water or a witch hazel wipe. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Apply a small amount of the medication in the anal area. Don’t use more than prescribed.

Remember to wash your hands after applying the medicine. The medication can be used four times daily, or as directed by the health care provider.

What Are The Side Effects? 

A very serious allergic reaction to this medication is uncommon. However, some of the potential side effects linked with the use of Anusol are: 

Acne, allergic reactions (trouble breathing, skin rashes, swelling), dryness, burning, hair follicle irritation, hypopigmentation, hypertrichosis, and itching. 

If you experience any of the above mentioned side effects, then discontinue using the ointment and immediately call your health care provider. 

Anusol ointments should not be used by women who are pregnant or breast feeding.

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor before using this ointment. 

Are There Any Drug Interactions? 

Some medicines may interact with Anusol HC Hemorrhoid Ointment. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any of the following medicines: 

Barbiturates, cholestyramine, colestipol, carbamazepine, fluconazole, lithium, hydantoins, rifampin, or thioamines. 

Aprepitant, estrogens, nefazodone, clarithromycin, macrolide immunosuppressants, or steroidal contraceptives. 

You must also avoid taking anticholinesterases, anticoagulants, live vaccines, macrolide immunosuppressants, ritodrine, or theophylline because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Anusol. 

Anusol ointment may also interact with other medications not mentioned in the list. You must consult your doctor before you start, stop, or alter the dose of any medications.
