Anusol HC Ointment can be used for getting rid of the pain, swelling, itching, and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids. 

Anusol creams or ointments are corticosteroids that can be applied topically to significantly reduce the itching and burning sensations in and around the anal area. 

It is also effective in providing relief from swelling and inflammation caused by external hemorrhoids. Anusol suppositories can be used to heal internal hemorrhoid swelling. 

General Information About Anusol HC Ointment

Anusol HC ointment is formulated from 0.25% hydrocortisone. While hydrocortisone is the primary active ingredient in this hemorrhoid ointment, other ingredients also contribute to the efficacy of the medication.

The active ingredients of Anusol HC act on the skin to provide antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and astringent actions.

However, the ointment is not recommended to be used for a prolonged period because of its hydrocortisone content.

Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that can be absorbed through the skin into the systemic circulation. Extensive and regular absorption of hydrocortisone can lead to the common side effects of steroid use.

Generally, corticosteroid products like Anusol HC ointment should not be used for longer than 7 days.

Anusol HC is not recommended for use in people who show sensitivity and allergic reactions to its ingredients. It is also not recommended in people with skin fungal infections and lesions especially close to the areas affected by their hemorrhoids.

Some Anusol HC publications list zinc sulfate instead of zinc oxide as one of the ingredients. Both compounds provide comparable activities since zinc is the active agent needed.

Other ingredients found in Anusol HC apart from zinc oxide are bismuth subgallate, bismuth oxide, benzyl benzoate, and Peru balsam.

How Does It Work? 

Anusol HC hemorrhoidal ointments have antiseptic and astringent properties. They are used to cleanse and soothe the affected area. 

This hemorrhoid ointment gets quickly absorbed by the skin. It works by reducing the pain and swelling in and around the anal area. It also facilitates easy bowel movements. 

The product has astringent properties that cool and soothes the inflamed area.

How To Use It? 

Clean the affected area with mild soap & warm water or a witch hazel wipe. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Apply a small amount of the medication in the anal area. Don’t use more than prescribed.

Remember to wash your hands after application of the medicine. The medication can be used four times daily, or as directed by the health care provider.

Consult a doctor before using this product with children. 

What Are The Side Effects? 

A very serious allergic reaction to this medication is uncommon. However, some of the potential side effects linked with the use of Anusol are: 

Acne, allergic reactions (trouble breathing, skin rashes, swelling), dryness, burning, hair follicle irritation, hypopigmentation, hypertrichosis, and itching. 

If you experience any of the above-mentioned side effects, then discontinue using the ointment and immediately call your health care provider. 

Anusol ointments should not be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor before using this ointment. 

Are There Any Drug Interactions? 

Some medicines may interact with Anusol HC Hemorrhoid Ointment. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any of the following medicines: 

Barbiturates, cholestyramine, colestipol, carbamazepine, fluconazole, lithium, hydantoins, rifampin, or thioamines. 

Aprepitant, estrogens, nefazodone, clarithromycin, macrolide immunosuppressants, or steroidal contraceptives. 

You must also avoid taking anticholinesterases, anticoagulants, live vaccines, macrolide immunosuppressants, ritodrine, or theophylline because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Anusol. 

Anusol ointment may also interact with other medications not mentioned in the list. You must consult your doctor before you start, stop, or alter the dose of any medications.
