Dieting for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

There are many things that can be done to promote prostate health. Diet and supplements are two ways to keep your prostate in good health. What you eat directly affects your body including your prostate.

In general, the best diet for prostate health is one that promotes overall health. There are also a few lifestyle changes that can be made to help with symptoms of BPH. Several herbal supplements are marketed for enlarged prostates. Saw palmetto, beta-sitosterol, and pygeum are all are widely used in Europe. They are available in the U.S. and don't require a prescription.

 

Dietary Habits

To reduce symptoms of BPH you should incorporate these factors in your daily diet:

  • Eat more soy-based foods, such as tofu, miso soup, soy milk, soy beans, and vegetarian burgers
    • Soy-based foods, which are thought to be particularly valuable for hormone-dependent conditions such as BPH and prostate and breast cancers, provide phytoestrogens that help keep hormones balanced. Soy protein also may be heart healthy.
  • Eat fewer fried foods, high-fat salad dressings and sauces, and red meat
  • foods with fiber, such as high-fiber cereals and grains, fruits, and vegetables
    • Fiber helps improve regularity by decreasing pressure on the prostate from the lower bowel area, and helps prevent colorectal cancer.

 

Lifestyle Changes


Specific lifestyle changes can reduce the symptoms associated with BPH. These are a few changes that can reduce the symptoms of BPH:

  • Reduce stress, both on and off the job.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Keep your weight within normal limits.
  • Keep track of the number of times you urinate during the night. See your physician as soon as you notice an increase in frequency.
  • If your physician prescribes medication to treat your BPH, follow his or her directions precisely. Make sure your physician knows about all botanical extracts or nutritional supplements you are taking.
