Cholesterol - Healthy Ranges
If you are over the age of 20, then every 5 years it is recommended that you have fasting lipoprotein profile also known as a cholesterol test. The test is done 9-12 hours after a fast without food, liquids or pills. The results are total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol and triglycerides.
When you do get your blood test results back, your total blood cholesterol levels should be less then 200 mg/dl this is a desirable range. If your range is above 200 mg/dl but below 239 mg/dl this is considered borderline high.
If your cholesterol range is 240 mg/dl or above this is known as high blood cholesterol, meaning you are at a higher risk for a heart attack and stoke.
HDL Cholesterol
HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein. HDL is "good" cholesterol because it helps to lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. The higher the HDL level the better.
If your HDL is less then 40 mg/dl that is considered low HDL for men and for women less then 50 mg/dl is also considered low HDL. Anything from 40 to 59 mg/dl is ok but the higher the better. Over 60 mg/dl is high HDL or a low risk of heart attack and stroke.
LDL Cholesterol
LDL stands for low-density lipoprotein; this is the main carrier of harmful cholesterol in the blood. A high level of LDL cholesterol means a higher risk of heart disease and stoke. Less then 70 mg/dl is an optional goal if you're at very high risk of a heart attack or death from heart attack.
Less then 100 mg/dl is optimal for people with heart disease or diabetes. Levels 100 to 129 mg/dl is near or above optimal while 130 to 159 mg/dl is borderline high, 160 to 189 mg/dl is high and levels 190 mg/dl and above is very high.
Triglycerides are the most common type of fat in the body, they are a major energy source that comes from food and the body makes them as well. If levels are less then 150 mg/dl this is considered a normal range. Levels of 150 to 199 mg/dl is borderline high, 200 to 499 mg/dl is high and 500 mg/dl and above is very high.
