Wedge Pillow for Acid Reflux

There are several pillows available to help relieve acid reflux while sleeping. Before purchasing one of the pillows you should research to find the one that is right for you.

What Wedge Pillows Do

Wedge pillows are designed to relieve the symptoms of Acid Reflux or Gastroesophogeal Reflux Disease (GERD) and heartburn by elevating the torso to prevent acid from burning the lining of your esophagus while you sleep.

You should use a pillow that elevates your head 6 to 8 inches. It should also have a gradual incline that allows you to sleep on your side or back and with or without your pillow.

There may be an initial period of slight discomfort simply because you must retrain your body to sleep on an incline. You may not be used to the additional pressure on your lower-back and posterior, and it may take a few weeks to be able to sleep through the night on a wedge pillow.

The slight side-effects during a temporary transition period are offset by the fact that you will experience immediate relief from mild to moderate nighttime acid reflux symptoms. Retraining your body to sleep on an incline is much easier than dealing with the symptoms of Acid Reflux Disease and the side effects from medications.

As with any treatment wedge pillows do not work for everyone one but they do help some people relieve their nighttime heartburn.

People who suffer from Arthritis in their back or that have problems with their upper back or neck should consult a doctor before attempting to use a wedge pillow.

Natural Supplement for Acid Reflux - Alocid

Alocid is a natural supplement that can be taken along with using home treatments such as a wedge pillow. Alocid has been designed with traditional nutrients known to support digestion and reduce GI inflammation, thereby limiting the excessive reflux experienced by patients suffering from Acid Reflux Disease.

Alocid contains clinically evaluated ingredients, known to support both esophageal health and the body's complex digestive process; thereby lessening the chance of developing the many discomforting symptoms associated with your reflux condition.

Progressive Health's unique blend of nutrients include:

  • Orange Peel Extract 4:1 - Orange peel can provide symptomatic relief from reflux and indigestion. Interestingly, citrus peel extracts have even shown the ability to induce programmed cell death in stomach cancer cells.
  • Aloe Vera Extract Powder (100X) - Aloe vera extract has been used for years to aid in digestion and has a documented history of clinical use for the treatment of ulcers in the digestive tract.

This soothing plant is considered to be a gastroprotective agent, containing anti-inflammatory fatty acids. Extracts of aloe can reduce secretion of acid from the stomach (functioning similarly to antacid medications), and have been shown to actually prevent injury to the lining of the stomach from irritating substances.
  • Picrorhiza - This medicinal plant has a long tradition of use for indigestion in Ayurvedic medicine. Picrorhiza acts similarly to other 'digestive tonic' herbs by assisting digestion.

Research has shown that as many as 6 compounds in Picrorhiza have anti-inflammatory activity, inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme. This is useful for patients with chronic inflammation in the digestive tract resulting from maldigestion.
  • Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) - Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is licorice that has had the glycyrrhetinic acid removed for safety reasons. Extracts of licorice have demonstrated the ability to accelerate the healing of gastrointestinal ulceration (especially in the stomach and esophagus) possibly due to its antioxidant effect.
  • Digestive Enzymes (Protease, Amylase, Lipase) - Digestive enzymes aid digestion and help prevent heartburn.

The primary digestive enzymes are released from the pancreas: proteases (to digest protein), amylases (to digest carbohydrate), and lipases (to digest fat). Evidence shows that crude protein digestion is improved with supplementation of pancreatic enzymes.
