Herbs For Hypothyroidism

When treating your hypothyroidism, thyroid medications aren’t for everyone so there are alternatives. Thyroid medications make up for some symptoms but sometimes they don’t completely restore energy and vitality.

Natural supplements may help with symptoms of hypothyroidism and in some cases improve the functioning of the thyroid. Herbs can be used in the forms of dried extracts such as capsules, powders and teas. Another form is glycerites such as glycerine extracts or tinctures such as alcohol extracts. The herb bladderwrack can be used to improve thyroid function because it contains iodine. In the modern world though, hypothyroidism is not caused by iodine deficiency and too much iodine can cause a person to develop hypothyroidism. Which means bladderwrack should be avoided unless it is directed by your doctor.

Another herb called coleus forskohlii may help to stimulate thyroid function and increase thyroid hormone production. This herb should be taken in amounts of 50-100 mg, two to three times a day.

 

Additional Herbs That Can Be Used

Many times people with hypothyroidism also have high cholesterol and there are herbs that can help with lowering your cholesterol. One of those herbs is flaxseed which is rich in alpha-linolenic acid which is an essential fatty acid. Human studies have used flaxseed products and found that dietary flaxseed significantly improved cholesterol in patients with high cholesterol.

Hawthorn is another herb that helps lower cholesterol. Studies suggest that hawthorn tincture which is made from berries may help remove LDL or bad cholesterol from the bloodstream. It may also reduce the production of cholesterol in the liver.

Patients with hypothyroidism have significantly higher plasma levels of homocysteine. Supplementation with vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid can lower homocysteine.
