Have you heard of olive leaf extract?

Studies have shown that olive leaf provides a wide range of health benefits, but one of the most effective uses for the leaf is in the fight against herpes viruses. Olive leaf not only helps prevent herpes outbreaks, but it can also prevent the spread of the virus and actually can even kill the virus on the spot. Read on to find out more about this exciting supplement and how it can help fight herpes viruses.

What is Olive Leaf?

Olive leaf is simply the leaf of the olive tree. The leaf is narrow, oval in shape, and has a dusky green top and a white-sliver bottom. The leaf has been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes. The Egyptians used the leaf in burials, as well as to fight fevers. The first recorded use for the leaf in Western history was in 1843. During this time, the leaf was used to treat fevers.

Since the 1840s, the leaf has been used to treat a variety of illnesses and conditions, including regulating body temperature, fighting viruses, fighting bacteria, fighting parasites, fighting yeast, improving the heart, and fighting free radicals. According to research that dates back to 1908, it is the constituent oleuropein that gives the leaf its anti-viral properties. On the tree, this ingredient helps to fight off insects and pathogens.

Basically, oleuropein is a natural pesticide. When oleuropein was isolated in 1908, it was found that this is the material responsible for fighting off so many human diseases and viruses.

How Olive Leaf Helps Herpes

The anti-viral properties of the olive leaf are the most beneficial for herpes. Both oral and genital herpes (Type 1 and 2, specifically) are viruses that quickly spread from person to person. Once you get either form of herpes, you are stuck with it for life. There is no known cure for the virus, only containment methods that help prevent the further spread of the virus and help reduce the number of outbreaks.

According to research, it is the ingredients of elenolic acid and calcium elenolate (the leaf’s salt) that cause the biggest reduction in viruses. In in vitro studies, broad-spectrum antiviral activities were found when the acid and salt from the olive leaf were introduced to a variety of viruses, including HS-1 and HS-2 viruses.

Studies about Olive Leaf

The first olive leaf study was conducted in 1969. This study was conducted by Antimicrob Agents Chemother. In the study, researchers looked at the effects of calcium elenolate on several viruses in vitro. The herpes virus was one of the viruses studied. It was found that the olive leaf extract was highly effective at removing the virus from the area and killing it. This positive relationship indicates that olive leaf extract can be an effective treatment for herpes.

A 2003 study from the New York University School of Medicine tested the effects of the olive leaf against several viruses, including HIV. The study found that supplementing with olive leaf extract reversed the effects of some of the virus and made the symptoms less.

A 2005 study conducted by the Universidad Miguel Hernández in Spain showed that supplementing with olive leaf extract was highly effective against the viral hemorrhagic septicemia rhabdovirus (VHSV). The extract was also able to stop the virus from spreading into healthy cells. The researchers concluded that olive leaf extract would also be beneficial in treating a variety of other viruses without the risk of side effects to the host or the surrounding environment.

Other Benefits of Olive Leaf

Numerous other studies have also shown that olive leaf extract can help a variety of other conditions.

Colds and Flu

In a 1977 study where olive leaf extract was given to hamsters infected with cold and flu viruses, it was shown that the leaf reduced the risk of infection and eliminated the virus from the nose even after the hamsters were infected with the flu virus.

Diabetes

In a 1999 study from Hacettepe University, diabetic rats given olive leaf extract were shown to have reduced weight, lower cholesterol, and normal blood glucose levels.

Oxidation

According to a 2007 study from Australia, olive leaf extract has twice the amount of antioxidants as green tea and milk thistle. Heart disease In a 1999 study of rats from the University of Calabar, hypertensive rats were given olive leaf extract for 2-6 weeks. After this period, the rats showed lower heart rates and lower blood pressure.

Olive leaf has many beneficial properties that range far beyond simply helping reduce the spread of the herpes virus, but its effectiveness at fighting herpes and other viruses should not be ignored.

Directions for Use

Use olive leaf to prevent infections and stop outbreaks once they appear.

Preventing Infections

Prevent infections by taking a daily dose of between 500 and 1000 mg a day. You can also take olive leaf extract in combination with other herpes-fighting supplements for additional protection.

Stopping an Outbreak

If you currently have a visible outbreak of herpes, you should increase your dose to kill the virus and keep it from spreading. Take between 500 and 1500 mg of olive leaf extract every 6 hours until the virus is gone. Adjust your dose according to the severity of your infection.

Olive Leaf Dosage for Herpes
Prevention: Up to 1000 mg daily
Healing Outbreaks: Up to 1500 mg every 6 hours

Is Olive Leaf Safe?

A 1999 study from Hacettepe University looked at the safety of supplementation with olive leaf and cinnamon bark. The study found no side effects of supplementing with either ingredient. The rats showed positive signs of improvement in body weight and cholesterol levels, which indicates that olive leaf could help those conditions in humans as well.

Olive Leaf and Herpes Outbreaks

According to numerous studies, olive leaf extract is highly beneficial in the use of herpes infections. You can use olive leaf both as a preventative measure and help shorten and control outbreaks when they do occur. Olive leaf extract will work best against herpes when combined with other antiviral supplements, including zinc, lysine, selenium, vitamin A, and lemon balm. Olive leaf also provides other health benefits that can improve your health in multiple ways.

If you do get an outbreak, continue to supplement as normal, and add topical treatments and other care methods to shorten the duration of your outbreak and relieve pain during infections. With these steps, you may find that you have fewer, less-painful outbreaks of herpes.
