Symptoms of Passing Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are one of the most excruciating pains known to mankind and the medical profession.

It has been described as passing broken glass or razor blades. Kidney stones have even been found in the kidneys of Egyptian mummies.

There are few symptoms of passing a kidney stone, until it is too late and the pain hits you. The only thing you may notice before you pass kidney stones is a pain in the back, just under the rib cage.

If you experience this type of pain and your not sure if it is just back pain or a kidney stone, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you eat red meat pretty much every day?
  • Do you eat few, if any, fruits and vegetables?
  • Is your fluid intake mainly soda, colas or coffee?
  • Do you drink very little pure water?
  • Do you tend to drive everywhere, sit all day and slump in a couch at night?
  • Do you rarely, if ever, go for a brisk walk or go to a gym?

If you answer “Yes” to most or all of these questions along with high back pain you may experience the passing of a kidney stone very soon.

When you start to pass a kidney stone, you will have no doubt what is happening. The pain will be so intense and it will start in your back on either the left or right side just below your rib cage, eventually it will move right through you and end up either on your left or right groin area. When this starts it is an indication you are beginning to pass the kidney stone.

It can take several hours to pass a kidney stone, if your urine turns red or becomes dark that is a sign the stone has punctured the delicate lining of the urinary tract.

If you have the need to urinate but can’t, that is a sign the stone has gotten stuck in the urinary track and has closed off the flow of urine from the kidney. If this has happened it is very serious and you need to get medical attention immediately, since the urine cannot drain from the kidney and can flow back and cause a serious infection and cause permanent damage to your kidneys.

If you have no blood in your urine and can urinate, then you can avoid a trip to the doctor and the kidney stone should pass in a few hours.
