Statin Danger
When statin drugs entered the market they made great promises by replacing a line of pharmaceuticals that lowered cholesterol by preventing its absorption from the gut. The old drugs had side effects that included nausea, indigestion and constipation and they only lowered cholesterol slightly.
When statin drugs came along with no such side effects and lowered cholesterol by 50 points or more, they naturally were a great alternative.
One of the most popular statins is called Lipitor which 16 million Americans have now taken. The problem with statins is side effects didn't show up till several months after millions of people had already started to take them.
There was a 1999 study that was apparently unpublished that found that 36% of patients on Lipitor's highest dose reported side effects and even on the lowest dose 10% of patients still reported side effects.
Statin Side Effects
The most common side effect of statins is muscle pain and weakness, a condition called rhabdomyolysis which is most likely due to the depletion of coenzyme q10. Coenzyme q10 is a key nutrient that supports muscle function.
Another side effect that has been discovered is polyneuropathy, also known as peripheral neuropathy that is characterized by weakness, tingling and pain in the hands and feet and difficulty walking.
Heart failure has also been linked to statins. The heart is a muscle cannot
work properly when it is deprived of coenzyme q10. Dizziness is another common
side effect of statin use perhaps due to the pressure lowering effects of the
drug.
There have been two reported cases of cognitive impairment linked to statins
Lipitor and Zocor. Both patients suffered progressive cognitive decline that
reversed completely within a month after discontinuation of the statins.
A study conducted at the University of Pittsburgh showed that patients treated with statins for six months compared poorly with patients on a placebo in solving complex mazes, psychomotor skills and memory tests. It has been found that 15% of statin users develop some cognitive side effects.
