Exoprin Questions?

Find answers to common questions about Exoprin.

I heard that bone density is only gained in the first three decades of your life. Is this true?

For the most part, this is correct. However, the amount gained (or lost) does vary from person to person. Generally, we reach peak bone mass around 30-35 years of age. From this point forward, we encounter a constant and gradual decrease in bone mineral density, or a net bone loss. As well, women tend to experience accelerated bone loss after menopause. [top]

Other than Exoprin, how can I lessen my personal risk factors for developing Osteoporosis?

Contrary to popular belief, research has determined that Osteoporosis can almost always be prevented. Prevention begins in childhood, most notably with proper diet, and continues throughout the remainder of your life. The key components in a life-long prevention program include; a balanced diet (abundant in both calcium and vitamin D), engaging in weight-bearing exercise, limiting, or completely eradicating, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and having laboratory tests conducted early in adulthood to check for bone mineral density. Nutritional supplements can also aid in preventing Osteoporosis. [top]

I have bone pain and am eager to find out what my current bone mass is. If I go to the doctor I'm scared that the procedures and tests will be too invasive. Are they?

Not at all. Physicians use a standard bone mass measurement to differentiate between potential Osteopenia (the decreased calcification or density of bone) or Osteoporosis, as well as to assess the severity of your condition. This is done by a noninvasive procedure, which uses bone densiometers to measure bone mass. The process only takes a few minutes and the patient remains fully clothed. A dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan may also be used to determine your rate of bone loss and/or monitor the effects of treatment. Talk to the doctor about these tests. [top]

I am an overweight female and have heard that being overweight actually decreases my risk for osteoporosis. Does this mean I'm less likely to develop the condition?

This is a popular question. While being slightly overweight can afford you some protection against Osteoporosis, physicians often point to the other health conditions that may arise as a direct result from carrying extra body fat. Overweight individuals are more prone to serious disease conditions; all of which outweigh any benefits your current weight circumstance might have on bone health.

Post-menopausal women produce estrogen in adipose, or fat tissues. Thus women who weigh less than 130 pounds are at an increased risk for developing Osteoporosis than are women who weigh more. Because heavier women produce more estrogen-related compounds, they are less likely to suffer from osteoporosis and related fractures. However, due to the danger of obesity, weight that falls within the normal limits remains the best for overall health and for Osteoporosis prevention. [top]

I've just been diagnosed with Osteopenia and do not want it to progress to Osteoporosis. What can I do?

We always suggest first consulting with your health care provider. Follow any professional recommendations, as they may want to include drug treatment as a part of your initial treatment protocol. Five such medications have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S. for the prevention and/or treatment of osteoporosis. These medications have been shown to slow, or in some cases, stop bone loss and increase bone density; thereby reducing the chance of fracture.

For nutritional support; achieve adequate intakes of both calcium and vitamin D, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and always ensure your nutritional needs are met, never allowing yourself to be under-nourished or in a state of protein malnutrition. Although these needs can be accomplished by certain dietary and lifestyle modifications, a vast number of individuals fail to meet such demands. This is why nutritional supplementation often proves critical for maintaining and enhancing the nourishment needed by our body's many boney structures. [top]
