Are you looking for an effective solution for hemorrhoids? You have come to the right place.

Preparation H Ointment provides relief from hemorrhoids - both internal and external.

But, is it the right product for you? Read on to find out.

Preparation H was initially sold as a sunburn cream before it was marketed for hemorrhoids.

There are little variations in the active ingredients used in making the group of hemorrhoid ointments sold under the Preparation H brand.

However, each ointment includes a combination of natural remedies, essential oil and synthetic compounds proved to be effective in the treatment of hemorrhoids.

Commonly available Preparation H ointment for managing piles contains shark liver oil, light mineral oil, and phenylephrine hydrochloride all combined in a petrolatum base.

Preparation H helps you get rid of the common hemorrhoids symptoms such as local itching and discomfort in sitting.

This hemorrhoids ointment works on the affected area to temporarily shrink the hemorrhoidal tissue and alleviate burning sensations.

It acts like a coat to provide relief from anorectal discomforts.

Preparation H temporarily protects the irritated and inflamed anorectal surface to facilitate easy bowel movements.

How Does It Work?

Preparation H ointment provides a protective coating to alleviate irritation, itching, and discomfort caused by hemorrhoids.

When applied to the affected area, the ointment shrinks the hemorrhoidal tissue to make the bowel movements less painful.

It provides immediate relief from external and intra-rectal discomfort.

It eases both internal and external hemorrhoidal symptoms.

The product is effective at shrinking swollen hemorrhoidal tissues and providing relief from painful burning, itching, and discomfort.

What Are The Ingredients?

Phenylephrine HCl: It is temporarily used to relieve burning, swelling, pain, and itching caused by hemorrhoids.

It contains phenylephrine, which comes under the class of drugs known as sympathomimetic amines.

It temporarily narrows the blood vessels in the affected area. This decreases swelling and discomfort caused by hemorrhoids.

Mineral oil: It is known to heal internal hemorrhoids. The lubricating effect of mineral oil eases pain and facilitates easy bowel movements.

It also soothes swelling, itching, and tenderness around the anus. It also helps in reducing the strain that causes as well as aggravates hemorrhoids.

Inactive ingredients include corn oil, glycerin, butylated hydroxyanisole, benzoic acid, lanolin, paraffin, lanolin alcohols, propylparaben, methylparaben, mineral oil, purified water, tocopherols excipient, shark liver oil, thymus vulgaris flower/leaf oil, and white wax.

Active ingredients of the Ointment

  • Phenylephrine HCl – Shrinks hemorrhoids by reducing the sizes of the inflamed blood vessels of the anal canal.
  • Shark Liver Oil and Light Mineral Oil – Soothes the smooth muscles of the anal canal and is useful for healing bleeding wounds and oozing sores. These oils also lubricate the rectum allowing for easier, painless bowel movements and passage of stool.
  • Hydrocortisone – Is a corticosteroid that is used to reduce inflammation. It can also shrink hemorrhoids in the same way as Phenylephrine but by different means.
  • Pramoxine – A topical, local anesthetic also known as pramocaine. It numbs the skin by blocking the transmission of pain signals at nerve endings. Pramoxine is useful for relieving the burning sensation and itching associated with hemorrhoids.
  • Aloe vera – A very popular herb known to promote healing and protect against infections. Aloe vera can help those with bleeding hemorrhoids by healing the ruptured mucosal membranes of the anal canal.
  • Witch Hazel – Its astringent and anti-oxidant properties are needed for shrinking hemorrhoids as well as protecting the bruised and sore mucosal membranes of the anal canal.

What Are The Side Effects?

Phenylephrine HCl does not normally have any adverse side effects when used as directed.

However, mild pain may occur if the rectal tissue is bleeding. If the pain persists or worsens, you must quickly call a doctor.

Some people may experience rare side effects such as a headache, irregular heartbeat, shakiness, nervousness, and trouble sleeping.

Mineral oil may slow down the absorption of vitamins A, D, K, and E. If you are taking medications that contain mineral oil then you may consider taking vitamin supplements

Mineral oil may reduce the effectiveness of some oral contraceptives. You must consult a doctor before using the product.

Whether you use Preparation H Hemorrhoidal Ointment for internal or external hemorrhoids, you must consult a doctor if you have high blood pressure, thyroid disease, heart disease, or diabetes.
