8 Supplements That Help Your Prostate

Prostate problems can be effectively improved with all-natural supplements. This article discusses the most effective prostate supplements that can help shrink an enlarged prostate while providing relief for the major complications (urinary difficulties and sexual dysfunction) of prostate problems.

1. Avistate: The No-Frills Formula

Avistate is a prostate supplement from Progressive Health. It is an all-natural formula and every one of its ingredients has been proven in multiple studies to improve prostate health.

Avistate is formulated to help shrink enlarged prostates. It can also reduce painful and frequent urination in aging men.

Each bottle of Avistate contains 30 capsules of the supplement. The recommended dose is 1 capsule daily taken preferably in the morning with lots of water.

There are 6 active ingredients in Avistate. These are saw palmetto, nettle, Pygeum, and soy extracts, as well as selenium and lycopene. It may not contain as many active ingredients as most of the other prostate supplements discussed in this article but it includes the most important natural remedies for prostate problems.

By including the 3 most effective prostate herbs (saw palmetto, stinging nettle, and African pygeum), Avistate provides very broad medicinal benefits for improving prostate health. The addition of soy extracts, lycopene, and selenium only serve to increase those excellent benefits.

How the Active Ingredients of Avistate Work
  • Saw palmetto extract (contains fatty acids and phytosterols) – Inhibits the syntheses of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and the binding of androgen hormones to the receptors where they act. Also has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Pygeum extract (contains phytosterols, tannins, ferulic acid, and triterpenes) – shares the same anti-androgen and anti-inflammatory properties of saw palmetto.
  • Nettle extract (contains fatty acids, lignans, lectins, and flavonoids) – shares the same anti-androgen properties as pygeum and saw palmetto. It can also reduce estrogen and androgen levels in the prostate by inhibiting the transport protein responsible for delivering them to their sites of action.
  • Soy extract (contains isoflavones such as daidzein and genistein) – reduces the levels of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) and growth factors in the prostate while starving prostate cancer cells of nutrients.
  • Lycopene – an antioxidant carotenoid, it also has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that can improve prostate health as well as combat infections in the urinary tract.
  • Selenium – an antioxidant mineral proven in multiple large-scale studies to significantly reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

However, the inclusion of both lycopene and soy extract in the formula may reduce the efficacy of Avistate. At least one study indicates that this combination is not as effective as lycopene alone.

Also, the estrogenic activities of soy isoflavones can reduce the anti-estrogen activities of nettle.

Even with these limitations, Avistate is potent enough to deliver quick and lasting results. The majority of its users are satisfied.

2. Prostavar Rx: The Sterol-Rich Formula

Prostavar Rx is described as BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) inhibitor. It is one of the most popular and well-received prostate supplements on the market.

Each bottle of Prostavar Rx contains 90 pills and the recommended dose is 1 pill daily.

The all-natural ingredients of Prostavar Rx include the 3 popular prostate herbs: saw palmetto, stinging nettle, and pygeum. Other herbs included in this supplement are green tea (for its antioxidant properties); ginger (for its anti-cancer and cholesterol-lowering properties); epimedium and Muira puama (for their aphrodisiac properties).

Prostavar Rx also includes plant-derived phytochemicals such as quercetin, lycopene, and a phytosterol fraction rich in beta-sitosterol.

Quercetin and lycopene are antioxidants phytochemicals proven to help reduce inflammation in the prostate as well as shrink enlarged prostates. Phytosterols are anti-androgen compounds and they are also found in saw palmetto and stinging nettle.

Zinc is another important ingredient of Prostavar Rx. Since zinc deficiency is common among men suffering from prostate problems, the inclusion of zinc is important to improve prostate health.

Prostavar-Rx is rich in phytosterols especially beta-sitosterol. This extensively researched phytochemical has been proven to be useful in the treatment of BPH and it can definitely relieve the urinary difficulties associated with prostate enlargement.

However, supplements containing high concentrations of sterols are not without their demerits.

Because phytosterols are structurally similar to cholesterol, they can also accumulate in the body and worsen cardiovascular health especially when taken by those who have suffered previous heart attacks.

Also, those who cannot metabolize sterols properly (a condition known as sitosterolemia) should avoid sterol-rich supplements like Prostavar Rx.

3. Prosta Metto: The Anti-Inflammatory Formula

Prosta Metto is manufactured by Vitamin World. Although its label states that it is only meant to improve the urinary difficulties caused by prostate enlargement, its active ingredients can significantly improve prostate health.

The active ingredients of Prosta Metto include the herbal extracts of saw palmetto, pygeum, uva ursi, and pumpkin seed oil; zinc and vitamins B6 and E.

This formulation is a variation of the standard prostate supplement formula and, from user reviews, it produces excellent results.

Saw palmetto and pygeum have anti-androgen properties and can, therefore, reduce the effects of testosterone and DHT on the prostate.

Pumpkin seed oil contains anti-androgen phytosterols too but it is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These are anti-inflammatory agents and they are useful in the treatment of inflammation in the prostate and urinary tract.

The anti-inflammatory benefit of Prosta Metto is further improved by uva ursi.

Uva ursi is approved for the treatment of lower urinary tract inflammation in Europe. The compound responsible for the anti-inflammatory effects of the herb is arbutin.

Uva ursi also possesses antioxidant and antibacterial properties. It is especially effective for improving the urinary difficulties associated with prostate problems.

4. Prost-Rx: The Near-Perfect Formula

Prost-Rx is a prostate supplement from Hi-Tech Pharmaceutical Inc. Besides improving prostate health in aging men, Prost-Rx has been formulated to reverse the loss of libido caused by prostate problems.

Each bottle of Prost-Rx contains 90 capsules. The recommended dose is 1 capsule taken 3 times daily.

There are 15 active ingredients in Prost-Rx. The supplement contains the 3 common prostate herbs: saw palmetto, stinging nettle, and African pygeum. It also contains additional phytosterol. Therefore, it improves prostate health mainly by inhibiting androgen syntheses and activities in the prostate.

Prost-Rx includes lycopene and quercetin to help mop up harmful free radicals and reduce inflammation in the prostate.

Zinc is also present to protect and nurture the prostate back to health. To complement zinc, Prost-Rx includes vitamins B6 and E as well as the amino acids, L-alanine, L-glycine, and L-glutamic acid.

To improve sexual performance, Prost-Rx is formulated with 3 aphrodisiac herbs: Belizean man vine, epimedium, and Muira puama. These herbs increase blood flow to the penis while relaxing the smooth muscles of the organ.

The formulation of Prost-Rx contains natural and proven active ingredients. The combination of phytosterols and saw palmetto is especially notable even though the high proportion of sterols in the supplement means that men with cardiovascular problems should not take it for long periods.

None of the active ingredients of Prost-Rx antagonizes the other. In fact, they all complement one another.

Prost-Rx is well received by reviewers, and most of its users experience lasting improvements in urinary and sexual problems caused by BPH.

5. Prostalex Plus: The Plus-Two Formula

Prostalex Plus is a prostate formulation by Long Life Solutions.

It contains the usual natural prostate remedies such as saw palmetto, pygeum, lycopene, and beta-sitosterol as well as zinc, selenium, vitamin B6, and vitamin E.

Also, Prostalex Plus contains 2 uncommon prostate remedies: green tea leaf and pumpkin seed extracts.

Therefore, besides improving prostate health and relieving urinary difficulties by the mechanisms described above for the previous supplements, it also provides the antioxidant benefits of green tea and anti-androgen properties of pumpkin seed.

Pumpkin seed shares most of the same phytochemicals already present in Prostalex Plus. It is rich in fatty acids, beta-sitosterol, zinc, and carotenoids. Also, it contains Delta-7-sterine, which is a steroid.

Delta-7-sterine competes with DHT at androgen receptors in the prostate. By blocking this androgen, it can help shrink enlarged prostates and contribute to the overall anti-androgen benefits of Prostalex Plus.

Green tea is known for its antioxidant phytochemicals but it also has anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties. Studies show that long-term consumption of green tea can significantly reduce the risks of prostate cancer.

Overall, Prostalex Plus is an effective prostate supplement and well received by users and reviewers.

6. Vasotrexx: The All-Inclusive Formula

Vasotrexx is manufactured by Dartford Kent Laboratories and formulated to relieve the urinary and sexual difficulties experienced by men with enlarged prostates. The recommended dose of Vasotrexx is 1 capsule taken twice daily.

Vasotrexx contains 16 natural prostate remedies listed in the table below:

Ingredients of Vasotrexx
  • prostate herbs - saw palmetto, stinging nettle, and pygeum;
  • aphrodisiac herbs - epimedium, Muira puma, and Belizean man vine;
  • plant-derived compounds - phytosterols (and beta-sitosterol), lycopene, quercetin, and soy isoflavones;
  • minerals and vitamins - zinc, vitamin B6, and vitamin E; and
  • amino acids - glycine, alanine, and glutamic acid

In a way, it may seem like Vasotrexx was formulated by simply adding every natural remedy known to improve prostate problems, relieve urinary difficulties, and enhance sexual performance. However, the combination of ingredients in Vasotrexx works at least for more than half of its users.

There are faults with the formulation of Vasotrexx (the combination of isoflavones, lycopene, and anti-androgen herbs for example) but that doesn't mean the supplement is ineffective.

Even then, the lack of focus may be responsible for the failure reported by a small but significant number of past users. One other complaint against Vasotrexx is the confusing instructions on the product label.

7. Prostanew: The 33-Ingredient Formula

Prostanew is the all-natural prostate supplement from Bioprosper Labs. It holds the distinction of containing more active ingredients than any of the prostate supplements discussed in this article.

Each bottle of Prostanew contains 90 capsules. The manufacturer recommends taking 3 capsules daily either at once or in divided doses.

Prostanew contains 33 active ingredients most of which are herbs. It also contains the usual plant-derived phytochemicals (lycopene, quercetin, and beta-sitosterol); vitamins (vitamins B6 and E); and amino acids (glycine, glutamic acid, and alanine).

However, it differs from most prostate supplements by containing more minerals (copper and calcium along with the usual zinc and selenium) and more herbs (red raspberry, cat’s claw, graviola, broccoli, mushrooms, juniper berry, buchu leaf, burdock root, cayenne pepper, goldenseal, gravel root, marshmallow root, and parsley leaf along with the more common herbs such as saw palmetto, stinging nettle, pygeum, green tea, pumpkin seed, and uva ursi).

The contributions of these extra herbs and minerals are debatable. Some are indeed useful, but most of them provide only minimal benefits.

Among the extra herbs included in Prostanew, the mushrooms (shiitake, maitake, and reishi) provide clear and proven benefits for the prostate. They contain AHCC or Active Hexose Correlated Compound, a phytochemical with immunomodulatory properties and proven to be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Even with such a long list of questionable active ingredients, Prostanew is still effective for most users. Evidently, the group of well-known and proven ingredients still shine through the clutter of filler herbs.

However, the combination of so many active ingredients is bound to produce some negative interactions between the many phytochemicals found in the supplement.

The strongest criticism of Prostanew is the rather high content of zinc. It contains over 300% of the recommended daily zinc intake. Zinc may be good for the prostate but it still has to be absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Such a high concentration may cause significant gastrointestinal problems and high blood zinc levels.

8. Super Beta Prostate: A Formula Straight Out of the Periodic Table

Super Beta Prostate is a prostate supplement formulated by New Vitality. Its rather odd formulation is an entirely new take on the usual prostate supplement formula.

Super Beta Prostate contains no herbs. Instead, it is formulated with phytosterols and beta-sitosterol.

There are benefits to using sterols instead of herbs such as saw palmetto, stinging nettle, and pygeum. For one, sterols are the major active ingredients in those herbs and it seems reasonable to simply extract the most active ingredients of the herbs instead of using the herbs themselves.

On the other hand, those popular prostate herbs contain other active ingredients besides phytosterols. They also contain fatty acids, tannins, ferulic acid, flavonoids, and other antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytochemicals proven to improve prostate health.

However, the oddest aspect of Super Beta Prostate formulation is its use of more than a few trace elements.

Besides zinc and selenium, Super Beta Prostate also contains boron, chromium, copper, germanium, iodine, manganese, molybdenum, silicon, and vanadium. And vitamin D.

While there are clear benefits from zinc, selenium, vitamin D, and even iodine, the other micronutrients in Super Beta Prostate can only do very little to help.

There may be small, preliminary studies indicating that ingredients such as boron and chromium performed better than placebos at improving prostate health but ingredients such as germanium have no place in a prostate supplement and may even be toxic.

Despite these shortcomings, Super Beta Prostate is well received and even endorsed by Joe Theismann, a former football player. From reviews and user testimonies, this supplement does relieve the urinary difficulties associated with prostate enlargement.
