Ashwagandha is a popular herbal medicine in Indian traditional medication. It is used to treat many conditions - thyroid problems being one of them.

Ashwagandha, which is otherwise known as Indian Ginseng or Indian Winter Cherry, is a shrub that is used as a medicinal herb.

Its scientific name is Withania somnifera and is naturally found in North America and India. It is an herbal plant that is used in Indian Traditional medicinal therapy because of its numerous health benefits.

How to Take Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha can be bought in powder form, tinctures, and capsules.

It is usually found in health food pharmacies and stories. Most commonly, people prefer to use capsules, but if you have problems swallowing capsules, the tincture would be the preferable choice for you.  

Take this treatment as prescribed or directed in the packaging. Also, you can add a teaspoon of powdered form of Ashwagandha in milk and drink it before you sleep.

When you are taking Ashwagandha, you need to monitor your temperature because it may cause your temperature to rise. In addition to that, you must consult your doctor for the right dosage for you. You should also follow the prescribed dosage to prevent toxicity levels.

Precautions To Keep In Mind

When Ashwagandha is taken in the recommended dosage, it is safe to use and does not cause serious side or adverse effects. When taken in huge amounts, one may experience a feeling of sedation.

Liquid preparations of the product may contain sugar or alcohol so patients who are alcohol dependent, have liver disease or diabetes should exercise caution when taking this. Some other precautions that you need to keep in mind are as follows:

  • PREGNANCY - When one is pregnant, Ashwagandha should not be used because it might lead to miscarriages. As much as possible it must never be taken either during the pregnancy period and when you are breastfeeding.
  • STOMACH ULCERS - The herbal supplement should never be taken when one has stomach ulcers for it is known to irritate the GIT or GastroIntestinal Tract.
  • SURGERY - Studies show that when one takes Ashwagandha it may cause the slowing down of the CNS or the Central Nervous System. Surgical treatments require medications such as anesthesia also has effects on the CNS, thus it is important to stop taking the supplement at least two weeks before surgery to prevent interactions between Ashwagandha and anesthesia.
  • AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES - It is not recommended that you use this medication when you have any form of autoimmune disease. Taking Ashwagandha may lead to an increase in the symptoms associated with autoimmune disease.

Given these precautions, it is important to exercise care and caution when taking the herbal supplement to prevent any problems during your treatment.
