Natural Supplements or Synthroid?
Synthroid is a medicine prescribed by doctors to treat hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough of the thyroid hormone called thyroxine.
Synthroid offers safe and effective treatment that adds back the thyroxine your thyroid gland cannot make naturally. It is important to work closely with your doctor to find the precise dose of Synthroid that is just right for you.
Each person with hypothyroidism is different, and the amount of Synthroid needed to help balance thyroxine levels may vary. There are other medicines that can affect Synthroid. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use including vitamins.
Your symptoms should improve within several weeks of starting on Synthroid. If they do not improve, if they get worse, or if you develop new ones, your doctor may have to adjust the dosage of Synthroid you are taking. Each time your dosage is changed your will have to have testing done to check your levels until a correct dosage is found.
Uses of Synthroid
- Synthroid treats hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone)
- Synthroid is also used to treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), which can be caused by hormone imbalances, radiation treatment, surgery, or cancer
- Synthroid should not be used to treat obesity or weight problems
Taking Synthroid
It is very important to take Synthroid with 8 ounces of water as the tablet can dissolve very quickly and swell in the throat, possibly causing choking or gagging. Take this medicine on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before eating. Synthroid is usually taken in the morning.
It may take several weeks before your body starts to respond to Synthroid. Do not stop taking this medication without the advice of your doctor. Even if you feel well, you may still need to take this medicine every day for the rest of your life to replace the thyroid hormone your body cannot produce.
Avoid the following food products, which can make your body absorb less Synthroid:
- infant soy formula
- cotton seed meal
- walnuts
- high-fiber foods
You should stop using Synthroid and get emergency medical attention if you have any of the following reactions:
- hives
- difficulty breathing
- swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
