Naturally Treating Osteoporosis

Since osteoporosis is difficult to reverse, prevention is the best treatment.

For prevention make sure to include calcium and vitamin D in your daily diet. If getting vitamin D is a problem, a vitamin D supplement is the best alternative. Daily exercise is also important to osteoporosis prevention. By including weight-bearing exercises, like walking and aerobics can help your bones stay strong and fracture free.

There are two easy at home remedies to increase the amount of calcium in your diet:

  • Add nonfat dry milk to everyday foods and beverages, including soups, stews, and casseroles. Each teaspoon of dry milk adds about 20 mg of calcium to your diet.
  • Add a little vinegar to the water you use to make soup stock from bones. The vinegar will dissolve some of the calcium out of the bones, for a calcium-fortified soup. A pint can contain as much as 1,000 mg of calcium.

There are some medications on the market that can help to stop bone loss, but they can come with side effects. Evista is an osteoporosis drug that can maintain bone mass and it doesn’t increase the risk of breast or uterine cancers like estrogen can do in hormone replacement treatment.

But Evista can cause blood clots and increase hot flashes.

Actonel, Boniva, and Fosamax can treat osteoporosis by slowing bone loss. There are strict ways to take these drugs so if they are taken incorrectly it can lead to ulcers in the esophagus. Reclast, is a once yearly infusion in your vein that can increase bone strength and reduce fractures.

There is another medication called Forteo that is used in postmenopausal women and men who are at a high risk for a fracture.

Forteo is the first drug shown to stimulate new bone formation and increase bone mineral density. It is a self administered a daily injection for up to 24 months, but the side effects include nausea, leg cramps, and dizziness. Calcitonin is another treatment option for osteoporosis.

Calcitonin is a naturally occurring hormone that inhibits bone loss. It is available as a nasal spray or injection and is quite expensive. But the side effects include nausea and skin rashes.
