How Vitamin B Can Help Your Carpal Tunnel

Inside your wrist is a narrow, boney passage called the carpal tunnel; it contains 9 tendons as well as a nerve called the median nerve and it is all encased in a slippery sheath called the synovium.

When the synovium and tendons become inflamed and swollen, they squeeze the median nerve which sends sparks of pain, numbness and tingling from your fingertips to your shoulder.

More women then men tend to suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome due to changes in female hormones caused by pregnancy, birth control pills and menopause. The female hormones cause the synovium to swell and since women have small wrists the swelling alone can cause carpal tunnel syndrome pain.

There are over 100,000 carpal tunnel surgeries performed each year, but more and more doctors are using a less drastic solution by adding vitamin B6 to their patient's treatment regimens. Treatments include using wrist splints at night, take an anti-inflammatory and use B6 for at least 2 weeks.

It is estimated that 40-50% of people with carpal tunnel syndrome could experience some improvement using this type of treatment.

Doctors are divided on why vitamin B6 provides relief from carpal tunnel syndrome, but many believe that synovium swelling and inelasticity are caused by B6 deficiency. Other doctors believe vitamin B6 acts as a diuretic, helping the body to eliminate excess fluid. During pregnancy, many parts of your body swell especially in the wrists, because you body is retaining fluid. Taking B6 helps to get rid of the extra water that is causing carpal tunnel syndrome.

Doctors recommend 50 to 200 milligrams of vitamin B daily to treat carpal tunnel syndrome.

Some evidence shows that vitamin B6 won't work properly unless you're getting adequate amounts of riboflavin and biotin which are other B vitamins. Each of these vitamins is synergistic meaning each works in concert with the other.

Doctors recommend getting 300 micrograms of biotin and 25 milligrams of riboflavin daily.
