Zoloft vs. Seronex 5-HTP

Zoloft is a prescribed antidepressant, classified as a Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). Zoloft is generally prescribed when a patient is experiencing low serotonin levels.

Serotonin is a hormone that is also called hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), it is located in the pineal gland, blood platelets, the digestive tract and the brain. Serotonin acts as a chemical messenger that transmits nerve signals between nerve cells and causes blood vessels to narrow.

When you first start taking Zoloft you may have thoughts of suicide especially if you are younger then 24 years old. Zoloft is FDA approved for children with obsessive-compulsive disorder, but it is not approved for treating depression in children.

Do not use Zoloft if you are using pimozide or an MAO inhibitor. Wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAOI before you can take Zoloft, and after you stop taking Zoloft, you must wait at least 14 days before you start taking an MAOI.

Before taking Zoloft tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, seizures or epilepsy, bipolar disorder, a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts.

Side effects of Zoloft include:

  • signs of an allergic reaction: skin rash or hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • mood or behavior changes
  • anxiety
  • panic attacks
  • trouble sleeping
  • impulsive
  • irritable
  • agitated
  • hostile
  • aggressive
  • restless
  • hyperactive (mentally or physically)
  • more depressed
  • have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself
  • seizure (convulsions)
  • tremors, shivering, muscle stiffness or twitching
  • problems with balance or coordination
  • agitation, confusion, sweating, fast heartbeat
  • drowsiness, dizziness, weakness
  • nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite or weight
  • decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm
