Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a disorder of the part of the nervous system that affects movements of the legs. Because it usually interferes with sleep, it also is considered a sleep disorder.

Symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome

People with RLS have strange sensations in their legs and an irresistible urge to move their legs to relieve the sensations. The sensations are difficult to describe: they are not painful, but an uncomfortable, "itchy," "pins and needles," or "creepy crawly" feeling deep in the legs. The sensations are usually worse at rest, especially when lying in bed. The sensations lead to walking discomfort, sleep deprivation, and stress.

The severity of RLS symptoms ranges from mild to intolerable. Symptoms get gradually worse over time in about two thirds of people with the condition and may be severe enough to be disabling.

The symptoms are generally worse in the evening and night and less severe in the morning. While the symptoms are usually quite mild in young adults, by age 50 the symptoms may cause severe nightly sleep disruption that can significantly impair a person's quality of life.

Treatments for RLS

Although movement brings relief to those with RLS, it is generally only temporary. For those with mild to moderate symptoms, prevention is key, and many physicians suggest certain lifestyle changes and activities to reduce or eliminate symptoms.

  • Decreased use of caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco may provide some relief.
  • Physicians may suggest that certain individuals take supplements to correct deficiencies in iron, folate, and magnesium.
  • Maintaining a regular sleep pattern can reduce symptoms. Some individuals, finding that RLS symptoms are minimized in the early morning, change their sleep patterns.
  • Regular moderate exercise helps them sleep better; on the other hand, excessive exercise has been reported by some patients to aggravate RLS symptoms.
  • Taking a hot bath, massaging the legs, or using a heating pad or ice pack can help relieve symptoms in some patients. Although many patients find some relief with such measures, rarely do these efforts completely eliminate symptoms.

Magnesium for RLS

If the massive amounts of body magnesium are low, you can have restless legs, cramps of the uterus and other muscles, migraines, and other problems. It is an essential mineral critical in 300 enzyme reactions in the body.

Calcium, magnesium, and potassium all have an effect on muscle contraction and relaxation. In addition, they help nerve transmission. Experts say that you can help calm your legs and get some rest by making sure that you're getting enough of all three minerals. Taking a daily dose of between 800 and 1,000 milligrams of calcium, 300 milligrams of potassium, and 500 milligrams of magnesium at bedtime may help reduce RLS symptoms.

Magnesium is important for muscles to be able to relax, while calcium helps them contract. Too little magnesium in relation to calcium (or low levels of both) can make muscles cramp more easily and may make some muscles, like the smooth muscles that wrap around big blood vessels, stay somewhat contracted.

Magnesium deficiency can make muscles go into spasms easily. When you're short on magnesium, the waste products of metabolism, such as lactic acid, are harder to flush out, so you may get tired, burning, sore muscles.

Natural Supplement for RLS - Sedorum

Sedorum's clinically evaluated ingredients may positively impact the amount and quality of your sleep by lessening the severity of your RLS symptoms and reducing dependency of common prescription medications.

Research has indicated that the ingredients found in Sedorum can effectively support your existing treatment program; potentially reducing restlessness, improving sleep quality, and reduces feelings of anxiety, without the use of harmful medicinals.

A few ingredients in Sedorum are:

  • Folic Acid - Reports exist of folic acid reducing symptoms associated with restless leg syndrome (RLS) such as numbness, cramps, and paresthesias. Pregnant women have a two to three times increased risk of developing RLS possibly due to deficiency of folic acid and iron.
  • Iron - Low levels of iron are associated with RLS in elderly populations, but occasionally plasma levels may not reflect a deficiency while bone marrow measurements can.
  • Magnesium and Calcium - Supplementation with magnesium may be useful for treating restless legs syndrome. In some RLS patients, magnesium treatment may decrease the amount of movement and increase the amount of sleep in mild to moderate cases.

Magnesium deficiency in patients with RLS demonstrates changes in the EEG patterns observed in sleep such as decreased duration and percentage of restorative REM sleep. Calcium, an essential mineral, is required for optimal absorption and effectiveness of magnesium and contributes to normalized brain and neurological function. Typically, these two should be supplemented together in a 2:1 ratio.
  • Valerian - Valerian root is commonly used for sleeping disorders (RLS is classified as a sleep disorder) due to its sedative-hypnotic and anxiolytic effects.
  • Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) - Combined with valerian, lemon balm can improve the quality and quantity of sleep. As well, EEG research on a lozenge containing lemon balm demonstrated anxiolytic effects suggesting it could better help cope with emotional and physiological stress.
  • GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid) - GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Gapapentin, a structural analogue of GABA, is a conventional drug that in clinical trials has shown effectiveness in reducing sensory and motor symptoms of RLS and improving sleep related difficulties.
