Heal N Soothe is an oral systemic enzyme formula for reducing pain and relieving inflammation. It is sold by Living Well Nutraceuticals, sponsored by Healthy Back Institute and manufactured by National Enzyme Company.
Heal N Soothe contains vitamin E and the peptide, L-glutathione. It also contains proteolytic enzymes and herbal extracts. The combination of these different classes of natural ingredients not only makes Heal N Soothe effective but also safe for long-term use.
The systemic or proteolytic enzymes are the major selling point of Heal N Soothe.
These enzymes are useful in the treatment of inflammation and injuries to soft tissues. They break down inflammatory factors such as leukotrienes and prostaglandins. Therefore, they also provide pain relief.
Enzymes also contribute to the healing of tissue damages and are especially useful for treating sprains, strains, fractures, bruises and arthritis symptoms. They speed up the recovery of tendons, ligaments and cartilages. So, they produce lasting effects with none of the side effects of conventional medications such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
Besides these effects, the enzymes included in Heal N Soothe can also break down scar tissues and thin the blood. Therefore, they can lower the risk of stroke and cardiovascular diseases by preventing the formation of blood clots.
The enzymes also regulate the immune system. This means that they can increase immune response to combat infections but also reduce it to prevent autoimmune damage to healthy tissues.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant. This means that it can prevent enter into tissues and prevent harmful free radicals from damaging them.
There are eight similar compounds called vitamin E. These are divided into 2 groups: tocopherols and tocotrienols. The form of vitamin E present in Heal N Soothe is tocopherol. More specifically, this all-natural formulation contains alpha-tocopheryl succinate, a salt of alpha-tocopherol.
Alpha-tocopherol is the most bioactive form of vitamin E.
It is involved in the glutathione peroxidase pathway. Therefore, it mops up peroxide radicals produced from lipid peroxidation reaction.
Vitamin E protects against tissue damage and the muscle ache that accompanies such damage.
L-glutathione is a tripeptide made from the amino acids, cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid.
It is also an antioxidant and like vitamin E, it preferentially removes peroxides before they damage cell structures. L-glutathione is the major antioxidant produced by living cells. Besides functioning as an antioxidant, it also maintains other antioxidants such as vitamins E and C in the reduced states in which they are needed for mopping up free radicals.
Glutathione is also needed for protein synthesis, DNA repair, enzyme activation and regulating the immune system.
With its diverse uses in the body, L-glutathione can improve general health as well as promote tissue repairs.
Serrazimes is a proteolytic enzyme system which similar in composition to the more popular enzyme system called Serrapeptidase but obtained from safer sources.
Serrazimes is obtained from 2 molds of Aspergillus species while Serraptidase is obtained from Serratia marcescens, a pathogenic bacterium found in the gut of Japanese silkworm.
The proteolytic enzymes of Serrazimes and Serraptidase have been shown to inhibit immune factors such as IgG and IgA; they also deactivate cytokines involved in inflammatory response, hydrolyze TNF-alpha (tissue necrosis factor alpha) and INF-gamma (interferon gamma).
In different clinical studies, these enzyme complexes have been shown to reduce inflammation and joint pain caused by carpal tunnel syndrome, surgery and tissue injuries.
Between the two enzyme systems, Serrazimes is better since it produced better anti-inflammatory effects while having fewer side effects.
Bromelain also contains protein-digesting enzymes like Serrazimes. However, it is sourced from a plant.
Bromelain is found in all parts of pineapple but it is obtained from the stems of the plant. It is used as a meat tenderizer. Bromelain is also an old remedy for reducing swelling. It is still used today for this anti-inflammatory property.
Different studies have been done on Bromelain. The results show that it is effective for reducing arthritis inflammation and pain. It is believed that the digestive enzymes in Bromelain affect the mobilization of neutrophils to the site of inflammation. They also inhibit the production of prostaglandin as well as proinflammatory cytokines.
Bromelain is effective for both acute and chronic inflammation.
Papain is obtained from the latex of the fruit of papaya tree. Papain is a group of proteolytic enzymes which belong to a larger enzyme family.
It is also traditionally used as a meat tenderizer but also to treat insect bites since it breaks down the proteins in their venoms.
Papain is useful for digesting antibodies which can promote inflammation.
Bioflavonoids are plant metabolites. They are mostly obtained from fruits and vegetables. Because of their importance, they were once referred to as vitamin P.
Citrus bioflavonoid complex is obtained from the pulp and peel of oranges, lemons and grapefruits.
The major bioflavonoids in this complex are glycosides such as hesperidin, quercitrin and rutin. Flavones such as tangeritin may also be present. These bioflavonoids have anti-allergy and anti-inflammatory effects.
They are also antioxidants and can increasing the amount of vitamin C that gets inside cells. Hesperidin improves blood flow and capillary permeability. This action helps distribute nutrients to sites of tissue injury while flushing away proinflammatory factors.
Rutin is also a citrus bioflavonoid glycoside.
It is obtained from fruits such as citruses and berries as well as from buckwheat and asparagus. Rutin is an antioxidant and in the body, it prevents iron from binding to hydrogen peroxide to create a very reactive, harmful free radical.
Rutin also thins the blood by improving blood flow and preventing blood clotting. It also has an anti-inflammatory property.
Boswellia refers to the resinous exudate obtained from the tree, Boswellia serrata. It has an anti-inflammatory property which is due to the boswellic acids it contains.
These active ingredients of boswellia extracts inhibit the release of LTB4, a leukotriene. Boswellic acids also produce their anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the migration of neutrophils to sites of inflammation and by preventing the degranulation of mast cells.
A number of studies have found boswellia extract to be comparable to conventional medications for reducing joint pain, stiffness and inflammation.
Ginger also has analgesic and antioxidant properties. It is effective for reducing muscle pain following exercises and joint pain due to arthritis.
Ginger is described as a dual inhibitor of eicosanoids because it inhibits both leukotriene, LTB4, and prostaglandin, PGE2. These anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties have been demonstrated in at least 2 species of ginger, Zingiber officinale and Alpinia galanga.
In those studies ginger extracts from these 2 ginger species were able to inhibit the production of proinflammatory chemokines in the cells of the synovial fluid. This effect is the reason why ginger produces an anti-inflammatory effect similar to NSAIDs and corticosteroids with none of their side effects.
Tumeric is also a spice and rhizome that is related to ginger. Its main active ingredient is curcumin.
Curcumin possesses a number of medicinal properties including anticancer, antibacterial and antiviral properties. However, it also possesses analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties similar to those of ginger.
The curcumin in turmeric extract inhibits the production of prostaglandin, PGE2, as well as leukotriene, LTB4 and LTC4. It also prolongs the lifespan of chondrocytes, the cells making up the cartilage. It does this by protecting them from the oxidative stress of toxins and free radicals.
Other damaging compounds blocked by turmeric extract are nitric oxide, tissue necrosis factor and enzymes, such as collagenase, elastase and hyaluronidase, which break down the cartilage.
The curcumin in turmeric extract, therefore, stops the degeneration of the cartilage and tissues made out of collagen. It can also speed up the production of new collagen.
Devil’s claw or Harpagophytum procumbens is a plant belonging to the sesame family.
Medicinal properties of this plant extract include analgesic, sedative and diuretic. It is used to treat arthritis and its anti-inflammatory property is due to the glycosides and sterols it contains.
A number of studies have detailed the benefits of devil’s claw for treating chronic musculoskeletal pains. In one study, the extract of the plant was found to have comparable efficacy to Vioxx for treating back pain.
Another study found devil’s claw useful for treating hip and knee pain caused by arthritis.
The manufacturer recommends taking 1 capsule of Heal N Soothe 3 times daily or 3 capsules at night time. These doses should be taken on an empty stomach or at least an hour before or after meals. Any other medications currently being taken should also be taken an hour after taking Heal N Soothe.
The Serrazimes in Heal N Soothe may cause gastric ulcers.
These proteolytic enzymes are also known to thin the blood. Therefore, Heal N Soothe should not be used along with anticoagulants such as warfarin and coumadin. Aspirin and NSAIDs should not also be taken alongside to reduce the risks of gastrointestinal bleeding and peptic ulcers.
In fact, almost all of the ingredients of Heal N Soothe interfere with warfarin and other anticoagulants and quite a number of them also increase the risk of peptic ulcers.
Serrazimes may also increase the absorption and distribution of antibiotics in the tissues. Therefore, Heal N Soothe may trigger more side effects from antibiotics.
It is advised that you consult your doctor before taking Serrazimes if you are already taking aspirin, anticoagulants and antibiotics.
Bromelain may increase heart rate. So care should be taken by people with heart disease when taking Heal N Soothe.
Heal N Soothe is also not recommended for children younger than 13 years. It is not to be taken by pregnant or lactating women.
Heal N Soothe is an effective medication for relieving musculoskeletal pains. It can be used to relieve muscle aches or arthritis pain.
The main advantage of the formulation used for Heal N Soothe is that every one of its ingredients has been scientifically proven to work for reducing pain and inflammation. Some of these ingredients even provide a better relief when compared to conventional medications.
However, for a product with all-natural ingredients, Heal N Soothe has a lot of side effects.
In addition, there is a high likelihood that patients who should benefit from its healing powers are already using some of the drugs that should not be combined with Heal N Soothe. For example, patients treating chronic pain are likely to be elderly people already placed on blood thinners, NSAIDs and/or antibiotics.
Furthermore, Heal N Soothe does not produce immediate pain relief. Its benefits may be long-lasting but they do take time to manifest. Therefore, Heal N Soothe is quite suited for treating chronic pain but not acute pain.
Still, Heal N Soothe compares favorably against conventional pain medications. Its side effects are fewer and not as serious and it also improves general health besides relieving pain and inflammation.
