Super Beta Formula from New Vitality

With over 5 million bottles sold and 10 years on the market, Super Beta Formula is well received by users. It is formulated differently from most of the prostate supplements on the market. Besides phytosterols, zinc, selenium and vitamin D, the other ingredients in the supplement can hardly be found in other prostate supplements. Does iodine make Super Beta Formula more effective? What about boron, chromium, germanium or vanadium? Read on to find out.

Super Beta Prostate is an all-natural dietary supplement from New Vitality. It is formulated to improve prostate health with a promise to significantly reduce the urinary difficulties associated with prostate enlargement.

Although Super Beta Prostate contains natural ingredients, its formulation is different from most of the natural prostate supplements available.

First, Super Beta Prostate contains a lot more minerals than most prostate supplements. Zinc and selenium, the two most common minerals included in prostate supplements, are present in Super Beta Prostate. The other minerals included in the supplement are boron, chromium, copper, germanium, iodine, manganese, molybdenum, silicon and vanadium.

The only vitamin included in Super Beta Prostate is vitamin D.

Secondly, the supplement contains no herbs at all. However, Super Beta Prostate still includes plant-derived active ingredients in the form of phytosterols especially beta-sitosterol.

The recommended dosage of Super Beta Prostate is 1 capsule taken 2 times daily.

Phytosterols vs. Prostate Herbs

The choice of phytosterols in this product has its merits and demerits. Phytosterols are perhaps the most common phytochemicals in plants. Most of the popular and proven herbs used for treating prostate disorders contain this group of compounds.

Saw palmetto, pumpkin seed, and pygeum contain phytosterols. Furthermore, beta-sitosterol is the major component of the phytosterols included in these herbs.

In addition, different studies have established that phytosterols contribute significantly to the medicinal benefits of these herbs. Phytosterols have been proven to improve prostate health and they act on the prostate by multiple mechanisms.

By formulating Super Beta Prostate with mixed plant phytosterols instead of herbs containing phytosterols, the manufacturer of the supplement was able to increase the amount of these sterols delivered to the prostate.

Each capsule of Super Beta Prostate contains 600 mg of mixed plant phytosterols and beta-sitosterol makes up 250 mg of the sterol content. This is a lot more phytosterol than most of the prostate supplements pack.

Even though this supplement gets more phytosterols by simply including those compounds instead of herbs such saw palmetto and pygeum, it is still missing the other bioactive phytochemicals that can promote prostate health.

Saw palmetto, pygeum, and the other herbs commonly used for treating prostate problems contain more than phytosterols. They also contain fatty acids, lignans, tannins and esters of ferulic acid as well as natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory phytochemicals that have also been proven to effective in the treatment of prostate problems.

The Active Ingredients of Super Beta Prostate

Phytosterols and Beta-Sitosterol

Phytosterols are sterols and stanols (saturated sterols) found in the plants especially vegetables and nuts.

They are structurally similar to cholesterol and their most popular health benefit is their ability to lower cholesterol levels.

However, phytosterols are also known for their anticancer properties. Different studies have confirmed that plant sterols reduce the risks of lung, stomach, breast, ovarian and prostate cancers.

The most popular member of this group of compounds is beta-sitosterol. Like most phytosterols, beta-sitosterol reduces blood levels of cholesterol. It lowers total cholesterol levels as well as LDL (low-density lipoproteins) cholesterol.

To do this, phytosterols inhibit the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.

The main advantage of this cholesterol-lowering ability is the improvement of cardiovascular health. However, there is another equally important benefit of lowering cholesterol level: reducing the levels of androgen hormones.

Phytosterols and Prostate Enlargement

One of the uses of cholesterol in the body is the syntheses of androgen hormones. Therefore, when the amount of cholesterol absorbed into the body reduces, the production of androgen hormones falls.

This means that any disorder caused by high levels of androgen hormones can be treated with phytosterols. Prostate enlargement is one such disorder.

Beta-sitosterol and other phytosterols included in Super Beta Prostate can reduce the number of androgens in the prostate, and by extension, prevent the overstimulation of the prostate by these hormones.

By reducing prostate enlargement, phytosterols can relieve the symptoms of BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia) such as urinary difficulties.

In one study, 60 mg/day of a phytosterol preparation was found to be effective for increasing urinary flow and reducing the frequency of urination in 200 men with BPH.

How Phytosterols Improve Prostate Health
  • By lowering cholesterol levels and, therefore, reducing the production of androgen hormones
  • By inhibiting the enzyme, 5-alpha reductase, needed to convert testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a more potent androgen proven to cause prostate enlargement
  • By killing off prostate cancer cells
  • By reducing inflammation in the prostate

Care should be taken when using dietary supplements with high concentrations of phytosterols because these sterols can also increase the risks of heart diseases especially in men who have suffered previous heart attacks.

Because phytosterols are structurally similar to cholesterol, high blood phytosterol levels (which is easily achieved with a supplement like Super Beta Prostate) can clog blood vessels and impede blood flow to the heart.

Therefore, Super Beta Prostate should be avoided by men with histories of heart diseases.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is naturally synthesized in the skin on exposure to the ultraviolet rays.

Although it is traditionally known for its role in the mineralization of the bone, the medicinal benefits of vitamin D extend well beyond this. Because of its extensive distribution in the body, vitamin D deficiency is linked to different medical disorders including prostate cancer.

New evidence from clinical studies also shows that vitamin D possesses multiple medicinal properties including anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and immunomodulatory properties.

With these medicinal properties, vitamin D can protect the prostate against oxidative damage; prevent prostatitis (prostate inflammation); reduce the risks of prostate cancer; and relieve the symptoms of prostate enlargement.

Therefore, the inclusion of vitamin D in Super Beta Prostate is not only to improve general health but also to prevent prostate problems and reduce the severity of their symptoms.

Zinc

The prostate preferentially stores zinc. In fact, the concentration of zinc in the prostate is over 500 times the blood level of the mineral. Zinc is needed to maintain prostate health.

Zinc deficiency has been linked to a number of prostate problems including prostate cancer, prostatitis, and BPH.

How Zinc Improves Prostate Health
  • Inhibit the conversion of testosterone to DHT
  • Lower estrogen levels and, by extension, speed up the breakdown of DHT
  • Form antioxidant enzymes that can protect the prostate from damage caused by free radicals
  • Reduce the risk of prostate cancer by preventing DNA damage while promoting DNA repair

Zinc is included in Super Beta Prostate to support prostate health and boost immunity.

Selenium

Selenium is a trace mineral in the body. It is known for its antioxidant properties and is an important component of a family of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

As an antioxidant, selenium can reduce oxidative stress in the prostate. Therefore, it can prevent cellular damage in the prostate and reduce the risks of BPH and prostate cancer.

In fact, a number of large studies have been done to investigate the link between selenium and prostate cancer. These results of these studies show that selenium can indeed reduce the risk of prostate cancer especially when it is combined with vitamin E.

Boron

Boron is another trace mineral that can improve prostate health.

A number of studies have shown that boron can reduce the risk of prostate cancer. It reduces the levels of PSA (prostate-specific antigen). A healthy prostate only stores a small amount of PSA. Therefore, high PSA levels are one of the diagnostic tests for prostate problems.

Experts believe that boron improves prostate health by lowering the levels of steroid hormones such as testosterone and DHT.

Chromium

The major health role of chromium in the body is to help lower peak sugar levels. It also promotes the breakdown of proteins and fats.

Chromium is included in Super Beta Prostate because it can help lower blood sugar levels and also reduce the amount of fat stored in the body. Since diabetics and overweight men have high risks of BPH, chromium can help prevent/reduce prostate problems in these men.

Copper

Copper is included in Super Beta Prostate for two reasons. First, it has an antioxidant property that can help protect the prostate against oxidative damage.

Secondly, zinc supplementation depletes the copper stored in the body. Therefore, to avoid copper deficiency, copper supplementation is usually alongside long-term zinc supplementation.

Germanium

Germanium is a rare mineral believed to have anti-cancer properties. However, studies done on this subject have failed to establish a positive link.

In one study, the patients who took germanium got worse than those who took a placebo and all of the patients in the germanium group suffered from the toxic effects of this element.

Iodine

Although it is the thyroid gland rather than the prostate that requires iodine, thyroid diseases can indeed cause prostate problems.

More specifically, studies have shown that low iodine levels can increase the risks of thyroid cancer. In one large epidemiological study known as NHANES 1 (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), the researchers found out that optimal iodine levels can reduce the risks of prostate cancer by as much as 29%.

Iodine supplementation has also been successfully used to shrink enlarged prostates.

The exact mechanism by which iodine improves prostate health is still unknown. However, experts believe it involves the thyroid hormone receptors in the prostate. Since iodine is required for the production of these hormones, low iodine levels can lead to low thyroid hormone levels in the prostate.

In addition, researchers have found a sodium-iodine pump in the tissues of the prostate. This means that the prostate needs iodine for some metabolic reasons still unknown. In fact, this iodine pump is targeted when prostate cancer is being treated with radioactive iodine.

Manganese

Manganese is another essential trace element. It is needed by the body to improve immune functions, promote bone health and maintain reproductive health.

Manganese is included in Super Beta Prostate to boost sexual performance. In this role, it can increase sex drive, sperm count and the production of sex hormones. Since prostate problems can also cause sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction and delayed ejaculation, the manganese in this supplement can help relieve those problems.

However, the included manganese may also directly improve prostate health. Studies have shown that the body forms an antioxidant enzyme known as manganese superoxide dismutase from the mineral.

In one Finnish study, this enzyme was proven to help reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Molybdenum

Molybdenum is needed in trace amounts in the body where it mostly acts as a cofactor in a number of metabolic reactions. One of these reactions is an important step in the production of uric acid.

Molybdenum is included in Super Beta Prostate to improve the production of uric acid. Uric acid improves urogenital health. Therefore, molybdenum can relieve the urinary difficulties and sexual dysfunctions associated with prostate problems via increased uric acid production.

Silicon

Silicon is included in Super Beta Prostate because it improves immune function.

Although there are not many studies investigating this property of silicon, the few studies done on the subject confirm that silicon can indeed boost immunity especially when taken with the amino acid, arginine.

To boost immune functions, silicon increases the population of lymphocytes. By stimulating the immune system, silicon can indirectly protect the prostate from harmful free radicals and invading microbes.

Vanadium

Vanadium is another trace mineral needed in the body. It has been shown in a few studies to help support prostate health, especially in aging men.

In addition, vanadium can help maintain optimal blood sugar levels (and improve prostate health much like chromium) and also reduce cholesterol levels (and by extension, reduce the production of androgen hormones).

Is Super Beta Prostate Effective?

Super Beta Prostate is well-reviewed by past users. In fact, it is endorsed by Joe Theismann, a former football player, who recounts his story about relieving urinary difficulties with the supplement.

Although Super Beta Prostate comes highly recommended, its product page is a little lacking in essential information. First, the manufacturers did not mention the side effects to expect from this supplement. However, from the testimonies of past users, these side effects are mild and are mostly gastrointestinal complaints.

Secondly, the product’s website does not provide any indication of when to expect relief while taking Super Beta Prostate.

Super Beta Prostate does contain one of the most effective plant-derived remedies for prostate problems. Its high concentration of beta-sitosterol is the major reason many find it effective. In addition, it also contains zinc, selenium and vitamin D, all of which have been independently proven to help improve prostate health.

However, the inclusion of some of the other active ingredients in Super Beta Prostate is curious.

Ingredients such as vanadium, molybdenum, germanium, and silicon may sound exotic but there is no compelling evidence demonstrating that they are particularly effective in the treatment of prostate problems.

In addition, the efficacy of Super Beta Prostate depends a lot on beta-sitosterol. There are indeed other natural plant-derived phytochemicals and herbs that can help. While some of these herbs contain smaller amounts of beta-sitosterol, they do contain other ingredients that are proven to improve prostate problems.

Overall, Super Beta Prostate is effective for relieving the urinary difficulties associated with prostate problems. It has been on the market for over 10 years and shipping more than 5 million units. It is safe and well-tolerated by its past users.
