Vasotrexx contains 16 active ingredients meant to improve prostate health and provide relief for men suffering from urinary and sexual problems arising from enlarged prostates. It contains all the right ingredients but is their combination effective? Read on to find out whether Vasotrexx works and what to expect from using it.

Vasotrexx is a natural prostate supplement from Dartford Kent Laboratories.

It is formulated to improve prostate health in aging men. Specifically, Vasotrexx can relieve urinary difficulties and enhance sexual performance, the two major complications of BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate enlargement).

Vasotrexx is available as capsules, and the manufacturer recommends that users take 1 capsule twice daily. The product page also promised relief from the symptoms of BPH in 3 – 4 weeks. Reported side effects of Vasotrexx are mild and mostly gastrointestinal discomforts.

There are 16 active ingredients in Vasotrexx including herbs, plant-derived compounds, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids. Each of these natural ingredients has been proven to help shrink the prostate and provide quick relief for the symptoms of BPH.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto or Serenoa repens is one of the most common herbs used to treat prostate problems. The medicinal extract is taken from the berries of the palm.

Saw palmetto extract contains fatty acids and phytosterols. Both of these groups of phytochemicals can lower cholesterol levels in the body. Since the body makes androgen hormones from cholesterol, the active phytochemicals in saw palmetto can reduce the levels of androgens in the body and especially in the prostate.

One of the chief causes of prostate enlargement is the overstimulation of the prostate by androgen hormones, especially by dihydrotestosterone or DHT.

Besides reducing the production of androgens from cholesterol, saw palmetto also inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT in the prostate. The third anti-androgen effect of saw palmetto involves blocking androgen receptors in the prostate and preventing DHT from binding to them.

The combination of these three anti-androgen properties significantly reduces the effects of androgen hormones on the prostate. It can prevent/reduce prostate enlargement and relieve the urinary and sexual problems associated with BPH.

African Pygeum

African pygeum is a Sub-Saharan tree. The herb known as pygeum is taken from the bark of this tree.

Pygeum contains phytosterols too. The other phytochemicals in pygeum that can promote prostate health are tannins, ferulic acid, and triterpenes.

These phytochemicals work in the same ways as sterols. Triterpenes share the anti-inflammatory properties of sterols while ferulic acid can lower the levels of androgens in the prostate much like sterols.


Nettle refers specifically to stinging nettle. Like saw palmetto, stinging nettle also contains sterols and fatty acids. Other bioactive phytochemicals in stinging nettle include flavonoids, lignans, and lectins. Therefore, its anti-androgen properties extend beyond simply lowering cholesterol levels and blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT.

Stinging nettle inhibits androgens in two new ways. First, it lowers estrogen levels in the prostate.

Estrogen has been proven to protect DHT from enzymatic breakdown. Therefore, it prolongs the activities of the androgen hormone in the prostate. By lowering estrogen levels, the active ingredients in nettle can reduce the effects of DHT on the prostate.

Secondly, stinging nettle inhibits a transport protein known as SHBG or sex hormone-binding globulin. This glycoprotein is responsible for transporting sex hormones, especially androgens and estrogen, to their sites of action.

Therefore, by inhibiting SHBG, stinging nettle reduces the amounts of estrogen and androgens reaching the prostate.

These two novel mechanisms of action differentiate stinging nettle from most of the herbs used in the treatment of prostate problems. It is, therefore, one of the most effective herbs used in traditional medicine to improve prostate health and treat the urinary problems and sexual dysfunctions caused by BPH.

Muira Puama, Epimedium and Belizean Man Vine

These 3 herbs are included in Vasotrexx to improve sexual performance. They are traditionally used as aphrodisiacs.

Erectile dysfunction and reduced sex drive are some of the symptoms of prostate enlargement in aging men. These herbs can help relieve those symptoms by improving libido.

Epimedium is a flowering plant native to Europe and Asia. Its aphrodisiac properties have been shown to be similar to those of sildenafil. The phytochemical in epimedium responsible for its effect on sexual performance is icariin.

Icariin stimulates the production of nitric oxide, a natural vasodilator. By releasing nitric oxide, epimedium increases blood flow to the penis while also relaxing its smooth muscles.

Muira puama is another flowering plant but native to the Amazon forest. In one study, this male-enhancement herb improved sex drive and erection in more than half of the men who took the herbal supplement.

Belizean man vine shares the same medicinal properties as epimedium and muira. It is found in the Belizean rainforest and also used by traditional medicine practitioners to improve libido.

Phytosterols and Beta-sitosterol

Although stinging nettle, saw palmetto and pygeum contain phytosterols, even more of these sterols is included in Vasotrexx. In addition, the most abundant sterol in mixed plant phytosterols is beta-sitosterol.

High doses of phytosterols especially beta-sitosterol can significantly improve prostate health. Studies show that the combination of beta-sitosterol and herbs containing phytosterols provide better results in patients suffering from prostatitis and prostate enlargement.

How Sterols Improve Prostate Health
  • Inhibit the enzymes, 5-alpha reductase type 1 and 2, responsible for the synthesis of DHT from testosterone
  • Bind to androgen receptors in the prostate and prevent androgens (especially DHT) from binding at those sites
  • Inhibit proinflammatory cytokines and, therefore, prevent/reduce inflammation in the prostate

However, taking high doses of phytosterols for a long period of time is not advised for a number of reasons.

Phytosterols are structurally similar to cholesterol. This similarity is the reason phytosterols can reduce the absorption of cholesterol. While the cholesterol-lowering property of these plant sterols can improve cardiovascular health, it can also cause heart problems.

Since phytosterols are related to cholesterol, they can also clog up blood vessels when they accumulate in the body. Therefore, dietary supplements containing high doses phytosterol are not recommended for men with histories of cardiovascular diseases.

Lycopene and Quercetin

Lycopene is a carotenoid naturally found in food crops such as tomatoes. It is usually responsible for the reddish colors of certain fruits and vegetables.

Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant and also an anti-inflammatory agent. It can help prevent damage to the prostate. It is effective in treating chronic prostatitis and BPH.

In addition, lycopene has been proven to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Studies investigating its benefits for the prostate show that lycopene can kill of prostate cancer cells by reducing the production of growth factors while stimulating the release of regulatory proteins.

Quercetin is also a natural antioxidant extracted from plants. It is a bioflavonoid with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial properties.

All of these medicinal properties of quercetin can help improve prostate health and relieve the urinary symptoms associated with prostate problems. As an antioxidant, quercetin can prevent the sort of oxidative damage that cause prostate enlargement.

As an anti-inflammatory agent, quercetin inhibits interleukins. By cutting off the inflammatory chain-reaction, it is effective in the treatment of prostatitis.

The antibacterial and antifungal effects of quercetin can also help treat urinary infections. By cleansing the bladder and urethral of harmful microbes, quercetin can relieve the painful, burning sensation some men experience while urinating.

Soy Isoflavones

The most important isoflavones found in soy are daidzein, glycitien, and genistein. Genistein is the most potent of these isoflavones.

These isoflavones have been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer in multiple studies. These studies demonstrated that soy isoflavones can reduce PSA levels in the prostate.

PSA or prostate-specific antigen is a protein found in very low concentrations in healthy prostates. However, PSA levels are usually high in men with prostate problems.

How Soy Isoflavones Improve Prostate Health
  • By protecting the prostate from oxidative damage with their antioxidant effect
  • By closely regulating the levels of growth factors and metabolic enzymes in prostate cells
  • By blocking the growth of new blood vessels required to funnel nutrients to rapidly spreading prostate cancer cells
  • By counteracting the effects of androgens in the prostate

However, the inclusion of soy isoflavones in Vasotrexx can be faulted. First, isoflavones have estrogenic abilities and may, therefore, protect DHT from an enzymatic breakdown in the prostate much like estrogen does.

Given the fact that most of the anti-androgen herbs in the supplement work by reducing the amount of DHT in the prostate, soy isoflavones may actually be providing the opposite effect.

Such conflict in the activities of the active ingredients can reduce the efficacy of Vasotrexx.

In addition, studies have shown that soy isoflavones should not be combined with some natural remedies for treating prostate problems. For example, a 2007 study published in the journal, Nutrition and Cancer, showed that the combination of lycopene and soy isoflavones was less effective than lycopene alone.

Vasotrexx does not only contain soy isoflavones but also lycopene.

It is, therefore, possible that the interactions between these isoflavones and some of the other herbs and phytochemicals present in Vasotrexx can make the supplement less effective.


The prostate preferentially accumulates zinc. In fact, the zinc stored in the prostate is over 500 times the amount of the mineral found in the blood.

The Roles of Zinc in the Prostate
  • Providing antioxidant protection as part of antioxidant enzymes
  • Reducing the risk of prostate cancer by protecting and repairing the DNA of prostate cells
  • Inhibiting the enzymes responsible for converting testosterone into DHT
  • Inhibiting estrogen and, therefore, speeding up the breakdown of DHT

The importance of zinc to prostate health is highlighted by the clinical discovery that zinc deficiency increases the risks of all types of prostate problems.

Vitamins B6 and E and the Amino Acids

Besides serving as an important cofactor for a number of important biochemical reactions in cells, vitamin B6 provides specific benefits for the prostate.

Vitamin B6 increases the absorption of zinc into the body, and by extension, increases the amount of zinc stored in the prostate. Given the importance of zinc to prostate health, this role may explain why vitamin B6 supplementation increases the rate of survival among men suffering from prostate cancer.

Vitamin E is the other vitamin commonly included in prostate supplements. It is an antioxidant vitamin and its benefits in the treatment of prostate problems are well-researched.

Different studies have established that vitamin E can reduce the risks of prostate cancer, prostatitis and BPH especially when combined with selenium.

Besides its antioxidant properties, Vitamin E can also reduce PSA levels and inhibit androgen hormones in the prostate.

The amino acids in Vasotrexx are included to improve prostate health by increasing the production of regulatory proteins.

Is Vasotrexx Effective?

Vasotrexx contains most of the standard natural remedies for improving prostate health. Its formula contains the right ingredients to deliver on its promise to relieve urinary and sexual problems associated with prostate problems.

However, there are some oversights with the formulation of Vasotrexx. The first one involves the inclusion of soy isoflavones particularly in combination with lycopene (combination demonstrated to be less effective) and stinging nettle (which has anti-estrogen properties).

Secondly, Vasotrexx does not contain selenium even though it contains vitamin E. Although vitamin E can improve prostate health on its own, its positive effects on the prostate is significantly enhanced when administered with selenium.

In fact, in studies investigating the potential benefits of vitamin E and selenium in prostate cancer treatment, selenium was considered more important to the prostate than vitamin E while their combination was found to be more effective than either of the natural supplements.

On the other hand, Vasotrexx contains a high proportion of phytosterols (and beta-sitosterol), a group of compounds universally acclaimed to support the prostate.

Overall, Vasotrexx is an effective prostate supplement. It may not have a perfect formula but some users report improvements in their sex drives and urinary difficulties. However, an equally sizeable number of users fail to see significant improvements.

One recurrent complaint about Vasotrexx is that the instructions on the product label are confusing. This can frustrate users, reduce compliance and cause dissatisfaction with results.
